Venice, one of the most iconic and photographed places in the world, is characterized by its charming neighborhoods, spectacular architecture and historic sites. Whether getting caught in a throng of visitors at St Mark’s Square or strolling through a narrow, secluded alley, there are intricate architectural details, exquisite colors palettes and awe-inspiring artistry everywhere you look.
These photos were taken before Venice suffered its worst floods (aqua-alta) in 50 years due to the combined effects of land subsidence causing the city to sink and climate change. It is heartbreaking to hear of the devastation and destruction the flood left in this region.
